About Hill Family Estate
After more than 23 years of growing grapes for some of Napa Valley’s finest wineries, the Hill Family decided to produce their own wines. In 2001, Hill Family Estate released their first vintage, a “Beau Terre” vineyard designated Merlot and proprietary blend by the name of “Origin.” By definition, Origin is the foundation, the beginning of something. For the Hills’, their passion for wine and love for the Napa Valley all begins with family.
Destiny drew them to this wonderful part of the world in the 1970’s. The romance of the fog rolling over the hills on the western side of the valley in the summer enchanted Darci to settle in Yountville. She immediately involved herself in the community by acting and singing at the Napa Valley Theatre Company. Doug Hill moved to town nine years later, with a degree in plant science and started managing vineyards for the Jaeger Family. In 1981, Doug and Darci settled down on an acre of land at the northern edge of Yountville. Their children, Ryan and Carly, grew up playing in the vineyards, tending chickens, and played baseball and basketball. They also helped their neighbors grow organic fruits and vegetables for the local restaurants including Thomas Keller’s world renowned “French Laundry.”
The family began to select and plant their own vineyards in the 1980’s, using their intimate knowledge of the multiple Napa Valley microclimates, soil variations and the many subtle growing factors which influence the characteristics of the grape and the resulting quality of wine. They planted Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Albarino, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc in the Los Carneros appellation. Known for its clay soils and cool climate, Carneros creates perfect conditions to allow these varieties to develop their complex flavors. They planted Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon in the Oak Knoll district, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah at 1500 feet elevation near Atlas Peak; both areas with a perfect environment to develop the rich berry flavor and intense fruit color that make these red wines some of the best in the world.
As growers and vintners, their goal is meticulous attention to vine growth and optimum fruit production, allowing each variety at each location to fully mature to its peak potential. The Hill Family’s constant pursuit of excellence in vineyard management and winemaking allows them to produce wines which beautifully express the individuality and depth of character in each varietal. From the romance of the label to the time and dedication put into each bottle, the Hill Family invites you to share their wine.
